RecycleMANIA!
January 27 through April 5, 2008
It’s time again for RecycleMania!
Over a 10-week period, campuses across the nation compete in this contest to see which institution can collect: the largest amount of recycleables per capita; the largest amount of total recycleables; the least amount of trash; or have the highest recycling rate.
This is the third year in a row that we are competing. Of the more than 200 schools that participated in 2007, we finished in 24th place, 5th in California out of 15 schools. The rules are the same this year- we will report (on a weekly basis) our recycling and trash tonnages. We are using the resident student population and staff of Housing Dining and Hospitality as our entry.
How well we do depends greatly on the awareness of the target population and how much support is given to it. Spread the word to all within your sphere of influence, and pay attention to recycling and waste reduction during this period of competition.
No recyclable should go into a trash can! Recycling is good, but waste reduction is equally important—perhaps more so. While it would be nice to win an award or come out ahead of other California schools, it’s even more important to REDUCE WASTE and IMPROVE OUR RECYCLING EFFORTS!
Thank you, and Happy Recycling!

May 2007 Trash Sort
This spring, Major Planet interns coordinated a Trash Sort at Sixth College. The goal of Facilities is to recycle at least 50% of UCSD’s total waste by winter 2008. Out of one day’s worth of trash from the Sixth College Camp Snoopy ResHalls, students found that:
- Approximately 25% of it could have been recycled
- The largest amount of potential recyclables by volume was cardboard and paper
- The second largest amount was plastics
- There was also a surprising amount of aluminum cans and metal containers
- There were some glass bottles as well
This was a strong message to students and the administration that more can be done to help save the planet. Remember to do your part, and recycle! If you have ideas about how to help, email Major Planet!

Earth Week 2007
HDS was once again involved with coordinating Earth Week 2007 events on campus. The Major Planet interns, with the help and cooperation of the UCSD Bookstore, set up a mock dorm room featuring sustainable products and tips on how to conserve energy while living on campus.
Members of the Housing and Dining Services staff were also honored during Earth Week for the outstanding efforts in promoting sustainability on campus:
• The Maintenance team received a 2007 Sustainability Award
• Marketing’s Dave DeCaro received the Staff Award for Outstanding Contributions in Sustainability • Major Planet interns Ellie Kim and Tim Haag received the Undergraduate Award for Outstanding Contributions in Sustainability
Congrats again to these members of the HDS team for their outstanding efforts in saving our planet!

Organic Vendor Fair
UCSD Dining Services hosted an Organic Vendor Fair at Plaza Café. The event featured an exciting range of organic products that many DS facilities are considering for their restaurants. Below are some photos from that event:

Earth Day 2006
proved to be a sun-shining success, with HDS on the scene to educate and entertain the masses. Students had the opportunity to win one of four Major Planet skateboards, took part in quizzes on recycling and organics, and had a blast tie-dying their very own Major Planet Earth Day t-shirts. Toby the Wonder Dog even stopped by the booth to greet his adoring fans.
